Adopting from India 

1) At least one parent must travel to India.  It is now a requirement.  They won't allow escorting anymore.  Parents can expect to stay in India for 7-10 days.

2)  India prefers married couples who have been in a stable relationship for at least five years (3 years should be married years).  Singles are permitted to adopt from India.  Same-sex partners and homosexual individuals are not permitted under any circumstances.

3)  One divorce for adoptive parent is allowed.

4)  No adoptive parent can be older than 55. For married couples the minimum age is 30 and maximum is 55.  For singles, the minimum age is 30 and maximum is 45.

5)  Maximum number of kids: 5 -- maybe even 6

6)  Minimum salary is $30,000; but the home study will reveal how the family functions on the salary

Costs:


1. Home study by a licensed agency in the state where the adoptive parents reside.   Varies from $800-$1500.

COI (Children of India) will accept the home study and our social workers will review the reports if outside of Ohio.  Adoptive families should ALSO contact their family/probate court in the county of residence for home study services as a cost comparison to private agencies and social workers.   Most counties offer these services at a very affordable and reasonable cost.   COI will provide India's guidelines for the home study agency.

2. INS Fees: Fee for I-600A from - $545 + cost of fingerprinting ($70 for each adult member of the household over the age of 18).  Parents can get more information from www.uscis.gov

3. COI fees:  $2250 - $250 for initial application and $2000 for dossier preparation and coordination of all activities in India. 

4. Orphanage fee: $3500 -- includes medical care, child maintenance, court fees, attorney fees, passport & visa fees.

5. Post placement: India requires a total of (4) social worker reports, (1) every 6 months for a period of 2 years post placement.

6. Travel expenses: ticket for child + round trip ticket for at least one parent.  The round trip ticket prices range from $1200-$1800 depending on the month traveled (but you should check for sale fares and/or ask friends and family to donate their unused Skymiles!)  Also, parents needs to factor in hotel & food and transportation expenses.  COI will guide the parents and help make the arrangements.
