Mike and Melissa have been married for eleven years and together for thirteen years. They have three sons, Jason, Jared and Matt. Jared and Matt are their biological children and are ages 12 ½ and 11. Jason is Mike’s son from a previous relationship. God brought circumstances together in 1999 (when Jason was 6) that Melissa could adopt him as her own (his biological mother’s rights were terminated due to abuse and neglect). Jason has had significant issues related to his time with his biological mother including RAD, PTSD and ODD. In addition, he has Tourette Syndrome and other special needs. This has made Melissa quite the de facto expert at advocating for a special needs child as a mom. In addition, she has worked with the MR/DD population frequently in her career, both as a case manager and in therapeutic recreation. She is currently a stay-at-home mom again, as she was before the boys went to school, due to a recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. She keeps quite busy though as she owns/operates a professional organizing firm from home, sings on the worship team at church and volunteers for several different causes as time allows. Mike is an electrician and has been since he graduated from high school and then trade school fifteen years ago. He works near the Nation’s capitol and specializes in wiring commercial fire alarm systems. He is an excellent provider for the family. When not working or commuting, he enjoys spending time playing with the boys (building tree houses, riding dirt bikes, biking on the C & O canal, etc). The boys are active in sports and other extracurricular activities (you can learn more about our family at our family blog (www.multitaskingmama.com). They also attend youth group twice a week at our church. Adoption has been on Melissa’s mind since she was a little girl herself. Spending time in the foster care system as a child, before going to live with her grandparents, fostered a desire in her to provide a home for a little girl someday. Yet, every time that Melissa and Mike have considered and looked into adoption in the past, God has said “not yet”. When you look back at the last ten years in their family you realize that His timing is perfect. Down Syndrome came into their lives through Melissa’s work and the family became attached to an older gentleman with DS several years ago that lived in a nursing home. He has since moved over four hours away to an institution but maintains contact with the Smallwood’s monthly. Adopting a child with DS though had never crossed their minds before until Melissa ran across a Reece’s Rainbow button on a fellow blogger’s site. The rest is history. Working closely with Andrea to find the program that will work best with Melissa’s health and Mike’s work schedule for travel, they prayed and decided Bulgaria was the program for them. It didn’t take long to fall in love with a dark eyed little girl named Molly (who will be known as Marlee when she comes home). Molly is five and needs to come home to her new family soon, so that she can begin benefiting from having a mama, daddy and big brothers! God is good and so far has given a great big green light to this adoption and the Smallwood’s could not be more excited!

The Ehlers Family--Kansas City,
MO
When the found Hallie on Reece’s Rainbow, they knew she was missing from their family. The only additional thing they could have asked for was if she were to have a little brother they could also adopt. God showed them, a few weeks later, that she had a little brother, just not by birth. Michael was just listed on the Reece’s Rainbow site and his eyes spoke volumes. The Ehlers decided to adopt both children concurrently. Unfortunately, since the children are not biological siblings, most of the fees are doubled. But they knew these were their children, and God would provide. Both of the children have limb differences and Hallie is especially vulnerable in her Eastern European orphanage due to the weakened immune system also indicative of her genetic disorder. The Ehlers ask that you take a moment to pray for their health and safety while they wait to come home. Thank you for reading their story.
